Addressing Paenibacillus-Associated Neonatal Sepsis and Post-Infectious Hydrocephalus in East Africa (PANS-PIH).
Dr. Marwan Osman is Research Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery at Yale University. His project entitled, “Addressing Paenibacillus-Associated Neonatal Sepsis and Post-Infectious Hydrocephalus in East Africa (PANS-PIH)” aims to improve diagnosis and management of PIH caused by Paenibacillus bacteria, a rising cause of neonatal sepsis. The goals of his project are to strengthen the clinical microbiology infrastructure at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda, evaluate novel point-of-care diagnostic assays, and generate genomic data to better understand antimicrobial resistance and virulence. This integrated approach aims to enhance early detection, guide treatment, and improve neonatal outcomes in East Africa and beyond.
