If you or your loved one were to go into <a href=\"\/complications-of-shunt-systems\/\">shunt failure<\/a> or <a href=\"\/complications-of-etv\/\">ETV failure<\/a> and are unable to communicate, medical IDs can provide rapid identification for emergency responders and medical personnel. Without proper identification, common symptoms, such as <a href=\"\/headaches-and-hydrocephalus\/\">headaches<\/a>, dizziness, sleepiness, and vomiting can be misdiagnosed and appropriate care could be jeopardized or delayed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>Accessing your Medical Alert ID Through your Phone\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your phone is typically your first point of communication, so it\u2019s of importance to have your medical condition saved on your device in case of emergencies. In a situation where you are unresponsive, first responders can use your phone to access your Medical Alert ID through your locked screen. It\u2019s crucial to have your medical information ready on your device if you don\u2019t have another type of Medical ID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the steps to entering your medical information on both iPhone and Android:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Android Phone<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, swipe your phone to access your authentication screen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select <\/span><b>Emergency Call<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Emergency Call<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screen, select the <\/span><b>Medical Info<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> icon in the lower left of the screen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Medical Info screen, you will see instructions on how to add your medical info<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to <\/span><b>Contacts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tap your profile at the top of the screen, then tap <\/span><b>Medical Info<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter the information you would like to show on your locked screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select <\/span><b>Save<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This will take you to a list of items you will be showing on your locked screen. Make sure that \u201c<\/span><b>Show on Lock Screen\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is toggled <\/span><b>On<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To view, select <\/span><b>Emergency Call<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after swiping on your locked screen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Emergency Call<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screen, select the <\/span><b>Medical Info<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> icon in the lower left of the screen. You will see the information you entered<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>iPhone<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, set up a <\/span><b>Medical ID<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Health app<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Health app, tap on the Summary tab and then click on your Profile picture in the upper right corner<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select <\/span><b>Medical ID<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select <\/span><b>Add<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter the information you would like to show on your locked screen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure that Enable Lock Screen Access <\/span><b>Show When Locked<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is toggled <\/span><b>On<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure that Enable Emergency Sharing\u00a0 <\/span><b>Share During Emergency Call<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is toggled <\/span><b>On<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Save, tap <\/span><b>Done<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To view, select <\/span><b>Emergency <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after swiping on your locked screen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Emergency screen, select the <\/span><b>Medical ID<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> icon in the lower left of the screen. You will see the information you entered<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What types of Medical Alert IDs are available for people with hydrocephalus and where can they be purchased?<\/h2>\n<p>Medical alerts come in various forms and shapes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HydroAssist\u00ae Mobile Application<\/li>\n<li>Bracelets<\/li>\n<li>Necklaces<\/li>\n<li>Dog tags<\/li>\n<li>Sport ID Bands<\/li>\n<li>USB Drives (as bracelets, keychains, necklaces, or just an old-fashioned flash drive)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The options seem endless! The different forms of medical alerts allow individuals to choose based on their personal preferences, as some may prefer a piece of jewelry and others may use HA\u2019s Mobile Application, HydroAssist\u00ae.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Download HA\u2019s Mobile Application, HydroAssist\u00ae.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/hydroassist\/\">HydroAssist\u00ae<\/a> is the first mobile app that allows you to record and store your hydrocephalus treatment history and access it when you need it from your mobile device or through your computer or laptop. Perfect for the individual living with hydrocephalus and the caregiver, alike, HydroAssist\u00ae allows you to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enter your current hydrocephalus treatments, including <a href=\"\/shunt-systems\/\">shunts<\/a>, <a href=\"\/etv-and-etv-with-cpc\/\">ETV, and ETV\/CPC<\/a>, and assistive devices, like an anti-siphon device (ASD).<\/li>\n<li>Store multiple active treatments, for those patients treated with more than one shunt or with a shunt and an ETV.<\/li>\n<li>Record changes to each individual treatment, including a setting change to your programmable shunt, a setting change to your ASD, or a surgical revision to your shunt.<\/li>\n<li>Make treatments inactive, allowing you to maintain a history of your past treatments.<\/li>\n<li>Store images from your MRI and\/or CT Scan<\/li>\n<li>Enter information about yourself or, if you are a caregiver, about the individual with hydrocephalus in the About Me section.<\/li>\n<li>Store medical and emergency contacts for easy communication, particularly in the case of an emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Download the app to multiple devices allowing parents, spouses, or a caregiver to have your latest information on their mobile devices in case of emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Access your information from your desktop or mobile device, for ease of data entry.<br \/>\nThere are several organizations and companies that provide different medical alert devices or jewelry and they can be purchased through multiple websites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What Information should people with hydrocephalus include on their Medical Alert ID\u2019s?<\/h2>\n<p>If you prefer jewelry or other devices:<\/p>\n<p>The message on your medical alert device (bracelet, necklace, keychain\u2026 etc.) should be simple and to the point. <strong>\u201cHydrocephalus\u201d<\/strong> should be engraved boldly on one side. The other side of the bracelet can have other information such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cVP Shunt\u201d, \u201cVA Shunt\u201d, \u201cVPL Shunt\u201d, \u201cLP Shunt\u201d, ETV or ETV\/CPC<\/li>\n<li>Emergency Contact and Telephone Number<\/li>\n<li>Name of your Neurosurgeon and Telephone Number<\/li>\n<li>A referral to another place for more information, for example, visit HA&#8217;s mobile application, HydroAssist\u00ae, or our <a title=\"Fillable Medical History and Medication List Pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroassoc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Hydrocephalus-Medical-History-Form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medical History and Medicine document<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many ways you can take precautionary measures to ensure that emergency responders are aware and can act quickly. The Hydrocephalus Association urges patients to take action in managing their hydrocephalus.
