These can include:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Compensated or arrested hydrocephalus<\/li>\r\n<li>Communicating hydrocephalus<\/li>\r\n<li>Non-communicating hydrocephalus, also known as obstructive hydrocephalus<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroassoc.org\/types-and-causes\/\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"[&quot;5e8f8cf0d4f6e391de55d8ee&quot;]\">For more detailed information on the types and causes of hydrocephalus visit this page.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<h2>What are the Symptoms of Hydrocephalus in Infants and Children?<\/h2>\r\n<p>The signs and symptoms can appear differently for each child, especially depending on your child&#8217;s age and how far along the condition is at the time of diagnosis.<\/p>\r\n<h4><strong>Symptoms in Infants and Toddlers<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p>In an infant, the most obvious sign is an <strong>unusual enlargement of the baby&#8217;s head as it expands in response to the outward pressure created by the extra fluid. <\/strong>This is because the bones of the skull are not yet closed, therefore allowing the head to expand. As an infant grows, the bones will naturally meet and fuse. You might hear your medical team refer to these as the suture lines.<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Young toddlers whose sutures have not yet closed may also show signs of head enlargement.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Additional signs may include:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The soft spot, or fontanel, on the top of the head, may be tense and bulging<\/li>\r\n<li>The scalp may appear thin and glistening<\/li>\r\n<li>The scalp veins may appear to have unnatural fullness (prominence)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Physical symptoms to watch for may include:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\r\n<li>Excessive tiredness<\/li>\r\n<li>Fussiness<\/li>\r\n<li>Poor feeding<\/li>\r\n<li>Downward deviation of the baby&#8217;s eyes (the sun-setting sign where your baby&#8217;s eyes are stuck looking down)<\/li>\r\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4><strong>Symptoms in Children and Adolescent<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p>Once an infant&#8217;s sutures have closed, <strong>the fluid has nowhere to go and builds up, causing pressure on the brain,<\/strong> a term that is referred to as<i>\u00a0raised intracranial pressure (ICP)<\/i>.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Physical symptoms may include:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\r\n<li>Nausea and\/or vomiting<\/li>\r\n<li>Vision problems (blurred or double vision)<\/li>\r\n<li>Fatigue and\/or sleepiness (older children may have difficulty waking up and staying awake)<\/li>\r\n<li>Poor appetite<\/li>\r\n<li>Problems with balance<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>Cognitive or behavioral changes may include:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Changes in personality and\/or more irritability than normal<\/li>\r\n<li>Inability to concentrate<\/li>\r\n<li>Hard time remembering things<\/li>\r\n<li>School performance may decline<\/li>\r\n<li>Delayed development (or problems with previously acquired skills) in such areas as walking or talking, or poor coordination<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>While at times the symptoms are very noticeable, other times they can be very subtle and progress so slowly that only in retrospect are they appreciated.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<h2>How is Hydrocephalus Diagnosed in Infants and Children?<\/h2>\r\n<p>There are numerous tests that can help diagnose hydrocephalus.<\/p>\r\n<p>The first and simplest test is <strong>measuring a baby&#8217;s head circumference at birth and during routine visits with your pediatrician.<\/strong> If your baby&#8217;s head is larger than normal or if there is a rapid increase in the head size, your doctor will refer you to a specialist (neurosurgeon).<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>For toddlers and older children, it may be a neurological evaluation<\/strong> that warrants a referral to a specialist and further diagnostic testing, which typically includes brain imaging techniques such as ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).<\/p>\r\n<h4><strong>Brain Imaging Techniques<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p><strong>Ultrasound <\/strong>is used in infants with open soft spots or fontanels. The ultrasound has no ill effects on the brain, it is painless, and it requires no sedation. It provides adequate visualization of the lateral ventricles, but other parts of the brain are not so well seen.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>CT scan <\/strong>is a reliable procedure for diagnosing and assisting in the management of hydrocephalus. A CT Scan is a sophisticated technique in which X-ray beams are passed through a patient&#8217;s body and pictures of the internal structures, in this case, the brain, are made by the computer. CT scans can usually be performed without sedation.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Note: CT scans use higher doses of radiation compared to simpler imaging tests. Improvements in CT equipment, however, have allowed for better images at lower doses for children. The signals are then developed into images by the computer.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Like the CT scan, it is a diagnostic technique that produces images of the brain-but unlike CT scanning, MRI does not use x-rays\/radiation. Instead, MRI uses radio signals and a very powerful magnet to scan your child&#8217;s body, and the signals are then formed into pictures by a computer. MRI is a painless procedure and has no known side effects.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>There are two types of MRI scans: <\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>The <strong>Single Shot Fast Spin Echo (also called a &#8216;quick brain MRI)<\/strong>, which takes about three minutes and rarely requires sedation, is used to assess ventricular size.<\/p>\r\n<p>The <strong>full MRI<\/strong>, which takes 30 to 60 minutes and may require sedation, shows more minute details. Before the longer scans are performed, your child may be given a sedative to minimize movement that would cause blurring of the images.<\/p>\r\n<p>At this point in the diagnostic process, it is important that a neurosurgeon become part of your medical team, along with your primary care physician. The endoscope creates an alternative pathway for CSF to flow out of the ventricles and around the brain. A shunt is not needed. Not everyone is a candidate for ETV treatment.<\/p>\r\n<h4><strong>CPC <\/strong>(ETV with Choroid Plexus Cauterization)<\/h4>\r\n<p>The third treatment option involves an ETV with the addition of a technique that burns or cauterizes the choroid plexus tissue to reduce the amount of fluid being introduced into the ventricles. This is referred to as choroid plexus cauterization or CPC<strong>. <\/strong><strong>This treatment is primarily used in children under 2. <\/strong>Not everyone is a candidate for ETV\/CPC treatment.
