Many US military personnel who suffered traumatic brain injury during service in Iraq and Afghanistan are developing hydrocephalus as a result.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Anyone, at any age, may be diagnosed with hydrocephalus.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Over 5,000 babies are born with hydrocephalus every year in the US alone.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Hydrocephalus is the most common reason for brain surgery in children.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><b>There Is No Cure<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Currently there is no prevention for hydrocephalus and there is no cure. The most common treatment is brain surgery to implant a shunt but a shunt is not a cure! A shunt is only a control and in children has a 50% failure rate in the first two years, requiring additional surgeries. While many people are helped by surgery, many more need further operations to stay well. Over 36,000 hydrocephalus operations are performed annually in the U.S. (one every 15 minutes.). Having a shunt may result in a single patient enduring dozens of brain surgeries just to survive; a single patient undergoing 100+ is not rare. The hospital charges for hydrocephalus are over $2 billion per year, yet the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invests less than $11 million per year in hydrocephalus treatment.<\/p>\n<h4><b>There Is a Crisis in Diagnosis<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>An estimated 800,000 older Americans have normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) as many as 640,000 of them are undiagnosed or may be misdiagnosed with Alzheimer&#8217;s, Parkinson&#8217;s disease, or dementia. Sadly, many are living in nursing homes unnecessarily &#8212; when properly diagnosed and treated the patient often returns to normal functioning.<br \/>Hydrocephalus often is undiagnosed and untreated in younger adults, leading to substantial loss of productivity and increased healthcare costs.<\/p>\n<h4><b>More Effective Treatment Is Needed Now<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Over the last 65 years, although technology has improved, there has been no significant change in hydrocephalus treatment. Research is essential. Since 2009 when the Hydrocephalus Association added &#8220;funding research&#8221; to its portfolio it has committed more than $13.8 million to research making it the largest non-profit, non-governmental funder of hydrocephalus research in the U.S.! The <b>average walker raises $127 or more<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Is there a minimum to participate?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>No. There is no minimum fundraising requirement to participate. However, we encourage every participant to support the Hydrocephalus Association and its mission by asking family and friends to donate and by setting an ambitious fundraising goal.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do I raise money based on how far I WALK?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>No, each WALK participant raises money through flat donations to HA.<\/p>\n<p><b>May I register the day of the event?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yes, you may register on the day of the event. However, the Hydrocephalus Association encourages participants to register as early as possible. Registering in advance gives you more time to raise funds and helps HA volunteers prepare for the expected number of participants. (See below, &#8220;Why should I register?&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><b>Why should I register to participate?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There are several reasons why we encourage walkers to register online in advance:<\/p>\n<p><b>Spreading the word and fundraising.<\/b><b><br \/><\/b> When you register, you automatically receive your own personal <b>WALK to End Hydrocephalus fundraising page<\/b>. From your page, you can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Share your story and upload a photo explaining why you are walking.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Easily start a <b>Facebook fundraiser<\/b> linked directly to your page.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Invite family and friends to support your fundraising efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Communication.<\/b><b><br \/><\/b>About <b>7-10 days before the event<\/b>, the Hydrocephalus Association sends registered participants important details about WALK day, including schedules, parking, and other event logistics.<\/p>\n<p><b>Planning.<\/b><b><br \/><\/b>Local volunteers work hard to make sure the event is fun, safe, and well organized. Knowing how many people plan to attend helps the committee prepare the right amount of food, beverages, t-shirts, and supplies.<\/p>\n<p>When participants wait until the last minute to register-or register on event day-it can make planning difficult for volunteers and may require HA to purchase items that could have otherwise been donated. While it may seem like one person won&#8217;t make a difference, when many people wait to register, it adds up quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Registering early helps ensure the best possible experience for everyone on WALK day.<\/p>\n<p><b>I registered last year, do I have to register again this year?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>YES! Each year we have a brand new event with new goals so each year we start again! <\/p>\n<p><b>What if I&#8217;m walking with young children or elderly family members?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>All WALK participants must register for insurance, attendance tracking, and record keeping. Registering as a family is easiest. For minors, use the <b>Youth WALKer<\/b> option. The WALK to End Hydrocephalus is not an official, sanctioned or timed running event. Routes subject to change.<\/p>\n<p><b>Are bicycles, roller blades or scooters allowed?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Bicycles, roller blades and scooters are NOT permitted. Motorized mobility scooters and mobility accessories are permitted.<\/p>\n<p><b>May I bring my dog to the WALK?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dogs are permitted at <b>some <\/b>WALK sites but not all. Where permitted, they must be leashed at all times and the owner must clean up after them. Please contact the local volunteer WALK Chair to obtain the rules\/regulations regarding dogs for your site. The contact information is located on the WALK website.<\/p>\n<p><b>Is there a fundraising rewards program?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>YES! When you fundraise for HA, you show the world that you can make a difference in the lives of those living with hydrocephalus. To thank you for your commitment and hard work, HA offers some great recognition gifts as rewards.<\/p>\n<p>WALK participants who are registered and raise $100 or more receive the WALK to End Hydrocephalus t-shirt as the first part of our recognition gift program. (T-shirts are distributed at the event; sizes are first come first served.) Those raising more than $250 qualify to receive an additional gift. May I still raise money?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Of course! You can choose to sign up as a &#8220;Virtual Walker&#8221; when you register. This means that even though you won&#8217;t be attending in person, you&#8217;ll still run a fundraising campaign and virtually &#8220;walk&#8221; to support HA. You may also forward money collected to the local volunteer WALK Chair.<\/p>\n<p><b>What if it rains on the day of the event?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>HA WALKS are held rain or shine, so plan accordingly and bring rain gear and umbrellas. Surely we&#8217;re not going to let a little water stop us!<\/p>\n<p><b>How long is the WALK route?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The length of the route varies for each WALK site. (Most routes are 5-kilometers or less &#8211; which equals 3.1 miles or about a one-hour walk for an average adult.) Participants are not required to complete the full route &#8211; only walk as far as feels comfortable for you. In your Participant Center, you can launch a fundraiser on Facebook that will connect directly toward your fundraising goal totals. In addition we have some pre-written email templates for you to choose from and customize. (Other fundraising tips and ideas are available on the Main WALK homepage\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Can I continue to raise funds after the WALK is over?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yes, participants are encouraged to continue to collect donations after the event is over (electronically or with cash\/checks.) These donations will be added to your personal fundraising total as well as the local WALK&#8217;s total.<\/p>\n<p>Donations not appropriately labeled will be added to HA&#8217;s general WALK total and will not be eligible for a recognition gift. All donations must be received by HA within four weeks post-event to be eligible for a gift. Participants may also forward additional donations to their local volunteer WALK leader. Although our deadline to receive credit for gifts is 4 weeks after the event day donations are accepted until the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p><b>Who should checks be made payable to?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Checks should be made payable to Hydrocephalus Association.<\/p>\n<p><b>Where does the money go?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Money raised with the WALK to End Hydrocephalus program funds hydrocephalus research as well as HA programs that provide support, education, advocacy and awareness. HA program services include one-on-one support for newly diagnosed families, HA support groups in cities across the US, HydroAssist (mobile app which allows patients to record and store their hydrocephalus treatment history), and much more.<\/p>\n<p><b>Are donations tax deductible?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yes, the Hydrocephalus Association is a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization. Our tax ID number is 94-3000301. A copy of HA&#8217;s IRS determination letter is available from the HA national office. Email <a href=\"mailto:walk@hydroassoc.org\">walk@hydroassoc.org<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p><b>Will there be food provided at the WALK?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Each WALK to End Hydrocephalus provides refreshments, however what is offered varies by site. Water is always provided and, at a minimum, snack bars, fruit and other snack items are available. Please check with your local volunteer WALK Chair if you want more information. (If you have a medical condition that requires you eat at a specific time we encourage you to bring your own food to ensure your needs are met.)<\/p>\n<p><b>How can I get more involved in the WALK to End Hydrocephalus beyond becoming a participant and raising funds?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>All WALK to End Hydrocephalus events are 100% volunteer initiated and coordinated.
