{"id":34553,"date":"2024-03-13T08:09:51","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T12:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hydroassoc.org\/?p=34553"},"modified":"2025-05-28T15:22:53","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T19:22:53","slug":"hydrocephalus-women-of-impact-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hydroassoc.org\/hydrocephalus-women-of-impact-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrocephalus Association Highlights Revolutionary Women in Medical Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Meet two incredible women who are inspiring HOPE throughout the hydrocephalus community with their dedicated expertise.<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hydroassoc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Dod-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"Women in Medical Research\" width=\"186\" height=\"186\" \/>Dr. Shenandoah \u201cDody\u201d Robinson &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Robinson is a highly recognized Professor of Neurosurgery (PAR) at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/johns-hopkins-childrens-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johns Hopkins Children\u2019s Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and holds active tenure at Kennedy Krieger Institute.\u00a0 Her subspecialty interests are the surgical treatment of epilepsy, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cerebral palsy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and related movement disorders, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroassoc.org\/congenital-hydrocephalus\/\">congenita<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/hydroassoc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">l <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrocephalu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>Photo (left):<\/strong> Dr. Robinson attends Maryland WALK to show unwavering support\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Lauren Jantzie &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jantzie is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/som\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a Researcher at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kennedy Krieger Institute<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jantzie\u2019s lab investigates pediatric brain injury common to infants and toddlers as well as pain and cognition in cerebral palsy. Her lab is dedicated to understanding disease processes in a developing brain, supporting ideation of new treatment options and therapeutic strategies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through their collaborative research program, Drs. Robinson and Jantzie examine how injury to the developing brain leads to deficits, and further explore what can be done to repair the damage. After receiving an Innovator Award from the Hydrocephalus Association (HA) in 2016, the duo began focusing more of their research efforts on hydrocephalus. With funding received from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroassoc.org\/research-we-fund\/\">HA\u2019s Innovator Award<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Robinson &amp; Jantzie were able to compete for additional funding from the Department of Defense (DoD) to further their work. In 2019, the pair was awarded a total of $2.3M in DoD grants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>\u201cI think one of the most motivating things for me is the families\u2026you see them in the middle of the night\u2026at the scariest of times. They often ask, why is there not something better? I want to contribute to that something better.<\/i>\u201d &#8211; Dr. Robinson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drs. Robinson and Jantzie are invested in the hydrocephalus community. They provide community members of the Association with education, insight, and inspire hope for those living with or have a connection to hydrocephalus. Robinson &amp; Jantzie are utilizing their expertise and resources to begin the first human clinical trial of a drug combination to prevent the development of hydrocephalus after a brain bleed. Recruitment has begun at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.
